This intricate filigree necklace was handmade in Oaxaca, Mexico, and are from a small town in a municipality called Tehuantepec. The traditional garb of this region consistsof heavily embroidered garments accessorized with large amounts of gold jewelry....often goldfiligreeearrings like these! Frida Kahlo, the famous Mexican painter, was my inspiration for going to Oaxaca. Duringher lifetime sheadopted the traditional Tehuana attireas a means of showing hersolidarity with the strong women of thismatriarchalZapotecsociety. I was pleased to find pieces that wererepresentative of what she mayhave worn.Thependant on this one of a kind necklace wascreated by the hands of older artisanssince many of the young people in the pueblo don't have interest in learning this art. It isbrilliant in every respect.
